Our Mission

It is the Mission of the Traumatic Stress & Traumatology Institute of California (TSTIC) to help organizations and individuals deal with the emotional impact of trauma at a systemic and personal level.  As a newly founded organization we stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before.

Our History & Profile

After a long career doing cutting edge work on Trauma and Stress, in 1995 Charles R. Figley, Ph.D., Fulbright scholar and renowned trauma expert, founded the original Traumatology Institute at Florida State University with a mission to alleviate trauma around the world through research, education and service.  The Green Cross Foundation was simultaneously created under the Traumatology Institute as the active branch of the Traumatology Institute--using what was learned in the research to provide rehabilitative assistance to victims of disasters.  Under the leadership of Kathleen Regan Figley Green Cross was there to respond to the survivors of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing and many disasters since.  The humanitarian work of Green Cross has been felt around the world, from the 2004 Tsunami to the more recent victims and workers of Hurricane Katrina.  The needs keep appearing and the work, research and education of the original Traumatology Institute continues.

Patricia Fox-West Ph.D., LMFT and George West J.D., BCCC came to the work of treating trauma from different, yet complementary, viewpoints, Pat as the LA Director of the Vietnam Veterans Family Counseling Program, George as a Hospital Chaplain.  This mix of the psychological and the spiritual yielded professional and personal relationships with a common concern of mitigating and alleviating the emotional and spiritual impact of trauma.  Patricia's research and experience in treating PTSD in Vietnam veterans and their families led her to a chance meeting with Charles Figley when they were both presenters at the National Symposium on the Legacy of Vietnam Veterans and Their Families, in Washington D.C.  In 2005 the collegiality between Patricia and Charles was renewed.  George's work in healthcare, supporting patients, families and staff in crisis, engaged Patricia's interests in treating Secondary Traumatic Stress, Vicarious Traumatization, Burnout and Compassion Fatigue, which led them both to the Traumatology Institute at FSU and back to Charles Figley.  The Traumatic Stress & Traumatology Institute of California was established by Patricia in continuation of this important work of helping institutions and individuals build resilience in order to cope with disasters and Compassion Fatigue resulting from the constant onslaught of human suffering and trauma.  Compassion Fatigue is a systems problem that manifests itself in staff symptoms thus both need to be addressed. The Traumatic Stress & Traumatology Institute of California is the only training site in the state of California recognized, accredited and certified in Compassion Fatigue.  We are mobilized for disasters by the Green Cross Foundation.
